Jack Whitten's show "The Greek Alphabet Paintings" at DIA Beacon keeps coming back to me. It's a series of black and white paintings that explode with his experimental mark making it's a great look at what a range of experimental and hand made tools can do with paint. Aruna D'Souza's review of the show for NY Times is worth a read
