Nearly Haptic, Gary Stephan

Stephan claims his paintings are “designed to be disappointing” as they are ultimately only valuable at the level of construction with the viewer. It is a nearly haptic experience, unraveling the layers of an inherently flat surface to discover what is propped up and why. As if a tactile encounter involving peeling or unfolding might reveal conclusions, in the end it can only concede more visual scaffolding, more layers of construction, another beginning, with a different ending.  Susan Inglett Gallery
