I’m a little early on the dog days of summer, but it's really hot and a good time to look back on the past twelve months. Today is the last in the ten part series reviewing the top blog posts (via web traffic) this year. I have to admit I'm pretty surprised this is the most popular post of the year, but then again maybe I shouldn't be.

King Louis XIV of France was documented by painters from his childhood.  Unlike Napoleon whose portraits documents his actions Louis XIV's portraits use classical mythology to enshrine and celebrate the Sun Kings power.

Hyacinthe Rigaud, Louis XIV, 701

Charles Poerson, Portrait of Louis, the Victor of the Fronde, portrayed as the god Jupiter, 1655

Jean Nocret, Chatêau de Versailles (Louis and his family portrayed as Roman gods), 1670
